At Catholic Charities North Dakota, many of the most meaningful successes happen quietly. They are the moments when a crisis is resolved, a burden is lifted, or a vulnerable individual receives the support they need to move forward with confidence.
For one client served through Catholic Charities North Dakota's Guardianship Division for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities, that moment came after an unexpected accident. The client had been receiving guardianship services for many years and was living independently in an apartment with support from a residential service provider.
When a battery in the client's cell phone overheated and caused a fire in the apartment, the situation quickly became overwhelming. Although the fire was accidental, the resulting damage left the client facing a repair bill totaling several thousand dollars. For someone living on a very limited income, the cost was far beyond what could reasonably be afforded. Without assistance, the client would have faced years of payments to repay the damage, creating financial stress and uncertainty that could have affected long-term stability and independence.
That's when the client's Catholic Charities guardianship worker stepped in to help. Working alongside the residential service provider, the guardianship team explored options and advocated on the client's behalf. Through persistence and careful investigation, they identified the battery manufacturer as a potential source of assistance and pursued coverage for the damage. After continued follow-up, the manufacturer agreed to cover the full cost of the repairs.
The outcome brought tremendous relief and gratitude. What could have become a long-term financial hardship was resolved through the support and advocacy of people committed to helping the client navigate a situation that would have been difficult to manage alone.
"In our work, it's often the small victories that matter most," said Donna Byzewski, Director of the Guardianship Division for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities. "When someone is able to maintain stability, preserve their independence, and avoid a hardship they couldn't have overcome on their own, that's success." While every situation is different, Catholic Charities guardians regularly help individuals navigate challenges involving housing, healthcare, finances, and personal well-being. Sometimes that support means helping someone access critical services. Other times, it means advocating through a complicated situation that could threaten a person's stability and quality of life.
For this client, that advocacy meant avoiding years of financial hardship and preserving financial stability and independence. It is a reminder that guardianship is about far more than paperwork or decision-making. It is about ensuring that clients have someone in their corner when challenges arise and a trusted advocate to help protect their rights, dignity, and well-being.
