Among other duties, the Vatican’s Apostolic Penitentiary is responsible for the granting and use of indulgences. On January 29, 2000, it provided a brief catechesis called “The Gift of Indulgence” for those desiring to gain the Jubilee Indulgence during the Great Jubilee of the year 2000. The section “General Remarks On Indulgences” provides a description of indulgences and how to gain indulgences. It is reproduced below. Point #2 has been modified to reference the Jubilee of 2025. The second half of the document has been omitted, as it applied to the Great Jubilee of the Year 2000.
The text of the catechesis “The Gift of Indulgence” is available below or as a downloadable PDF document:
To gain an indulgence you are required to pray for the intention of the Supreme Pontiff. (You are not praying for the pope himself, but rather for the spiritual good of the Church.)
Pope Leo has published a list of prayer intentions for each month of 2026. There are are available on the Pope’s Worldwide Prayer Network website.
The celebration of the Jubilee Year is not only an extraordinary occasion for benefiting from the great gift of indulgences which the Lord gives us through the Church, but it is also a fitting opportunity to recall the catechesis on indulgences to the attention of the faithful. The Apostolic Penitentiary is therefore publishing this sacred notice for the benefit of all who will be making Jubilee visits.
